Tricks, optical effects, light games, attractions and special rooms, based on science, physics and psychology, allow visitors to have fun and learn, unveil the tricks of the mind and test the five senses. Nothing is as it seems at the Museum of Illusions, born in 2015 in Zagreb as a unique project but then exported internationally. In fact, Rome is the 38th city in the world – the second in Italy after Milan – to have its own museum seat: an interactive space, just a few steps from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, capable of engaging kids and adults, science enthusiasts or the merely curious.
The museum aims at being a non-static space, open to active involvement: inside, visitors are invited to experiment, laugh, be creative, and do much of what is not normally allowed in a museum, to dive into the world of the unexpected. The use of the camera is not only allowed, but is essential to fully enjoy the experience offered, for example by taking amazing photos to post on social media.
The tour lasts about an hour and opens with a tribute to Rome, with a giant face of the dialect poet Trilussa following visitors with his gaze. Including rooms and installations, the more than seventy attractions arranged on a single floor offer wonders and surprises galore: it’s possible to play with one’s own image in the mirror room, try to stand balanced in the vortex tunnel, defy the laws of gravity in the rotated room, enlarge or shrink in the Ames room, experience the illusion of the “head on a plate” and the hidden body. Two attractions are featured exclusively in Rome: the symmetry room – a room perceived as whole even though we actually see only half of it – and the RGB room, one of the most “Instagrammable” rooms in the museum where visitors can play with as many as 3 different color shadows.
