Estate Romana 2023

Estate Romana 2023 is four months of events throughout the city, including film screenings, theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, meetings, guided tours, workshops for children and teenagers, and much more.

From 15 June to 15 October, it will invest all of Rome with events of all sizes in the name of a sustainable environment and accessibility for all.

This year cinema is the master with 24 open-air arenas and numerous dedicated initiatives, including those by the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, starting with the second edition of Roma Cinema Arena, the large 1,000-seat arena at the Aqueduct Park. Also organized by the Fondazione is the summer programming of Casa del Cinema that takes in the Ettore Scola Theater, immersed in the greenery of Villa Borghese Park. Alice nella Città, on the other hand, organizes the Floating Theater arena at the Villa Ada Lake.

But Estate Romana 2023 is much more. Below is a selection of the events and reviews scheduled in the city for this edition:


  • On the pedestrian area in ​​via Pesaro, in the Pigneto district, the 10th edition of Bande de Femmes is scheduled, the illustration and comics festival with meetings with writers and artists, live painting, and exhibitions;
  • In largo Alessandrina Ravizza, the Cinevillage Monteverde arena kicks off with a schedule of preview screenings, meetings with directors and actors, special cultural events, and live shows, as well as a sports village created in collaboration with the Coni;
  • Appointment in the Park of Torre del Fiscale for Attraversamenti Multipli, a festival that offers 45 appointments in dialogue with urban nature with performances and site-specific events, workshops, and talks.


  • Appointment with the third edition of Sempre più fuori, the multidisciplinary review at the Goethe Institut and the German Academy of Rome at Villa Massimo with book presentations, performances, shows, screenings, and a photographic exhibition, to encourage the meeting of different cultures and abilities;
  • Arcadia Urbana – Festa di Teatro Eco-Logico in Rome is planning a theatrical review for ecological sensitivity with the events taking place without electricity.


  • Energie Creative. Live expressions in the area of the theatrical, musical, and dance festival in various locations of the XIII Municipality offers eight events in the name of inclusiveness and multiculturalism, with emerging artists and established performers as protagonists;
  • Roma Città Aperta gives life to a series of open visits to the ateliers of the numerous artists involved, with the guidance of contemporary art experts and the presentation of cultural mediators;
  • Anomalie. Experimentation in the suburbs brings the XVI edition of the festival dedicated to the New Contemporary Circus and the Suburbs to the VI Municipality (Parco delle Canapiglie and Tor Bella Monaca Theatre), with the participation of Italian and international artists.


  • At the Torrino district, Decima Festival offers activities aimed at different age groups, including theatre, electronic music concerts and DJ sets, short film festivals, workshops, and conferences;
  • The XIV edition of the Festival della Letteratura di Viaggio is held between the Casa delle Letterature Library and the Palazzetto Mattei in Villa Celimontana with book presentations and meetings with authors and journalists, writing, film-making and photography workshops, urban trekking routes with workshops for professional operators in the tourism sector;

Three events taking place in fascinating areas of Rome complete the rich program of the Roman Summer 2023:

  • Between June and August, on the peninsula of the Villa Ada Lake, the new edition of the Villa Ada Festival offers concerts, DJ sets, stand-up comedy, editorial presentations, site-specific exhibitions and installations, new media arts, video mapping, and workshops. Among the expected artists: Marlene Kuntz;
  • At Villa Celimontana, from June to September, Village Celimontana returns, a historic event dedicated to jazz music. Alongside the concerts, a calendar of meetings, dance lessons, music workshops for children and teenagers, and talks on the history of jazz;
  • Concerts, stand-up comedy, musical writing and comics workshops, dance lessons, debates, and bookcrossing are the ingredients of Piazza Gianicolo, scheduled from June to September in Piazzale Garibaldi.

Estate Romana 2023 also offers many other events organized by the major cultural institutions of the city:

  • The Letterature International Festival of Rome, now in its XXII edition, organized by the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma. At the Stadio Palatino, in the heart of ancient Rome, a program of five evenings with free admission (3, 5, 9, 11, and 13 July) entitled The Memory of the World in homage to the work of Italo Calvino on the centenary of his birth. Guests include Margaret Atwood, William T. Vollmann, Fernando Aramburu, Jeanette Winterson, David Diop, Maaza Mengiste;
  • The Rome Opera House signs a new season of events at the Baths of Caracalla with a summer program of 50 evenings, including opera, dance, theatre, symphonic music, jazz, and pop;
  • The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, in the Cavea of ​​the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, offers four concerts dedicated to great cultured music, which sees artists such as Gianandrea Noseda, David Garrett, and Stefano Bollani on stage;
  • Big tours and national and international stars at the Roma Summer Fest, the review organized by the Musica per Roma Foundation. Until 27 September in the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone Cavea, over 40 artists are the protagonists of a unique season, including Bob Dylan, Sting, Ludovico Einaudi, Caetano Veloso, and Elvis Costello. As for Italian music, a program for audiences of all ages, from Antonello Venditti and Francesco De Gregori to Carl Brave, Madame, Tananai, Baustelle, and many others;
  • Until 6 August, an appointment with Summertime, the summer season produced by the Fondazione Musica per Roma at the Casa del Jazz, which brings the public the best proposals of Italian and international contemporary jazz with over 60 concerts and shows;
  • Appointment starting from 6 September with the 38ᵃ edition of the Romaeuropa Festival, organized by the Romaeuropa Foundation, which returns with extensive programming spread across 13 spaces in the capital with 90 shows, 300 replicas, and over 500 artists from all over the world for exploring the "geographies" of our time, between music, dance, theatre, the new circus, creations for children and digital arts.

All these appointments are flanked by the numerous exhibitions scheduled by the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the Mattatoio, and the MACRO.
