Choreographer and dancer working with live performances between theatre and dance, Armin Hokmi lands at the Romaeuropa Festival, staging a national premiere at the Rome’s Mattatoio, a piece inspired by the Shiraz Arts Festival, an event that between 1967 and 1977 brought together artists from all over the world in Iran, blending traditions and experimentation.
Of Iranian origin but based in Berlin, Armin Hokmi began his career in 2009 as a performer in independent theatre in Iran, before continuing his training and career abroad. His work questions how dance and choreography engage with audiences, examining the conventions of performance and their impact on perception. His choreographic language balances familiarity with known forms and gestures that escape classification, opening up new expressive horizons.
In Shiraz, Armin Hokmi revives the spirit of the festival that took place among the ruins of Persepolis and the gardens of Shiraz, translating its sense of freedom and exploration through dance. Seven dancers bring to life an intricate weave of movement and energy that meet and transform on stage. A dance of rhythms, memories, and imagination that bring the past onto the stage and reshape it in the present, through movement, remembrance, and renewal.
