It is the most important national bicycle race and one of the most prestigious in the world, a record it shares only with the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta. Since 1908, when it was conceived by the Gazzetta dello Sport, and with the sole exception of the period of the two world wars, every year the Giro d’Italia has traversed the length and breadth of the peninsula with an ever-changing route that alternates between mountain climbs (the event’s flagship) and flat stretches. And just in homage to the Gazzetta and the color of the paper in which it is printed, whoever heads the classification wears a pink jersey.
Once again this year, for the fifth time in the event’s history and for the second year in a row, Rome will host the 21st and final stage of the race. After three weeks of grueling competition, with a very tough course spread over more than 3,300 kilometers, with two time trials, six flat stages and five mountain stages (including one on the Superga hill, on the 75th anniversary of the “Grande Torino” tragedy to which the 107th edition was dedicated), just a few steps from the Colosseum we will discover the successor of Primož Roglič, winner of the 2023 edition. The 176 riders will arrive in the Italian capital on Sunday, 26 May, where they will cross the finish line set at the Imperial Forum.
A great sporting show, an extraordinary opportunity to promote tourism for a city always capable of reinventing itself, in which past and future coexist in the uniqueness of its monuments and streets.
