With the aim of promoting the protection and enhancement of the city’s cultural heritage, a new pricing system will come into effect in municipal museums and certain monuments under the jurisdiction of Roma Capitale from 1 February.
Residents of the Metropolitan City of Rome will have free admission to all sites, including museums and archaeological areas that previously charged admission fees (Musei Capitolini, Centrale Montemartini, Mercati di Traiano - Musei dei Fori Imperiali, Museo dell’Ara Pacis, Museo di Roma a Palazzo Braschi, Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Musei di Villa Torlonia, Museo della Forma Urbis, Sacred Area of Largo Argentina, Archaeological Area of the Circus Maximus, Museo Civico di Zoologia, Galleria comunale d’Arte Moderna). Special events and temporary exhibitions, shows at the Planetarium of Rome, visits to the Bunker with the air-raid shelters at Villa Torlonia and the Circus Maximus Experience will remain subject to a fee. MIC Card holders can take advantage of reduced rates for exhibitions and special events and priority access to all sites.
For tourists and non-residents, an admission ticket will be introduced for five museums and monuments that have been free to enter until now (Museo Carlo Bilotti, Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, Museo Pietro Canonica, Museo Napoleonico, Villa di Massenzio). The Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina, Museo di Casal de’ Pazzi, Museo delle Mura and the House Museum Alberto Moravia will remain free of charge.
The revolution envisaged by Roma Capitale will also affect one of the most beloved and visited monuments. To enter the basin of the Trevi Fountain (the part closest to the monument), tourists and non-residents must pay a ticket costing two euros, valid every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (including the first Sunday of the month). Access will remain free for residents, children up to 5 years of age and people with disabilities and their carers. Tickets can be purchased at 10 SmartPOS stations at the entrance, online at fontanaditrevi.roma.it (not yet active), at the Sistema Musei ticket offices, at Tourist Infopoints and at affiliated sales points.
