Luciano D'Alessandro. The Last Idealist

Luciano D'Alessandro. L'ultimo idealista-Foto Museo di Roma in Trastevere

"Human beings in the asylum ended up that society forced to the most total exclusion because they were judged useless, if not harmful to its predicted mechanism of productive efficiency, while in that same asylum the perfect synthesis of the exploitation of man by man was masterfully achieved "(Luciano D’Alessandro).

These words summarize the poetics of Luciano D'Alessandro, one of the leading exponents of social reportage, to whom this anthological exhibition is dedicated, which brings together more than one hundred shots taken over sixty years of research by the recently deceased Neapolitan photographer. The exhibition itinerary is divided into five thematic sections: "The excluded", "Inside the houses", "Inside the work", "Cholera in Naples", "Earthquake in Irpinia". Within each, a careful and lucid observation of reality emerges, capable of restoring all aspects of social exclusion and imprisonment. The section of "The Excluded" (1965-67) represents the first real investigation conducted in the Materdomini Asylum of Nocera Superiore on the condition of the mentally ill, which becomes a social complaint, while the photographs of “Inside the houses" (1977) and "Inside the work "(1979) made with Gianni Berengo Gardin, are characterized by everyday stories narrated without any rhetoric. Also interesting are the photojournalistic services in Europe, the Soviet Union and South America made for Espresso, Time, Daily Telegraph, Die Zeit, Le monde, Unità and Corriere. Promoted by Roma Culture, Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, the exhibition is accompanied by the volume POSTCART EDIZIONI, edited by Roberto Lacarbonara, containg the contributions of two friends and colleagues of the photographer: Lisetta Carmi and Gianni Berengo Gardin.
