Words, music and memory, 82 years after the terrible massacre of 1944
Eighty-two years after the tragic massacre of 1944, on 24 March from 3 p.m. in Piazza del Campidoglio, Roma Capitale renews its civic commitment to remembering the victims through an initiative that brings together institutions, the academic world, and citizens in a shared journey of reflection through words, music and historical testimony.
The ceremony opens with institutional addresses, followed once again this year by a powerful visual moment: the unfurling along the Cordonata del Campidoglio of a long banner bearing the names of the 335 victims, paying tribute to Rome, Medaglia d’Oro al Valor Militare per la Resistenza.
The programme continues with the reading of letters written by wives, mothers and sisters of those arrested and murdered at the Fosse Ardeatine, performed by students from the Corso di Laurea in Scienze politiche e Studi internazionali dell’Università LUMSA di Roma.
This is followed by a performance that fills the square with music from the Banda musicale del Corpo di Polizia locale di Roma Capitale. The repertoire opens with classical pieces, including Arioso and Aria sulla IV Corda by Bach, the Adagio Cantabile by Beethoven, and the famous Coro dal Nabucco by Verdi.
A section dedicated to film music follows, featuring two masterpieces by Ennio Morricone: “Tema di Jill” da C’era una volta il West and “Here’s to You” da Sacco e Vanzetti.
The final part is devoted to patriotic and Risorgimento pieces, including La Campana di S. Giusto di Arona e Drovetti, the traditional La Bandiera di Tre Colori, La Leggenda del Piave di E.A. Mario, and, in closing, l’inno nazionale italiano, Il Canto degli Italiani di Mameli e Novaro.
