On Friday, 26 December, at 11 a.m., the evocative Basilica of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli hosts Le vie dei canti, the 28th edition of the traditional Concerto di Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Day Concert), conceived and directed by Luigi Cinque.
The title, inspired by Bruce Chatwin's book, presents an edition featuring ancient and contemporary sounds, with an interweaving of voices, cultures and musical languages ranging from flamenco to Iran, from the mountains of the Caucasus to the folk songs of the southern Mediterranean, in dialogue with Monteverdi, Ligeti, John McLaughlin and Luigi Cinque.
With free admission, the concert is an immersive, powerful and ritualistic experience: an artistic and spiritual event that combines celebration and reflection in an atmosphere suspended between the sacred and the profane. Among this year's protagonists are Greta Panettieri, Urna Chahar Tugchi, Carles Denia, Giovanna Famulari, Marco Colonna, Riccardo Tesi, Alireza Mortazavi, the Musicisti del Caucaso, the NUbras Ensemble, and the Hypertext O'rchestra, an ensemble of master bagpipers, who bring to life a quadraphonic composition conceived to transform the sacred space into an ideal sound square.
One of the city's most eagerly awaited cultural events, the Concerto di Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Day Concert) is a meeting and experimentation event and a choral moment of voices, united in a single great musical narrative. Over the years, the churchyard and interior of the basilica have hosted jazz, rock, classical music and folk traditions leading artists – from Paco Peña to Raiz, Fabrizio Bosso to Jivan Gasparyan, Petra Magoni to Tenores di Bitti, Danilo Rea to Youssou N'Dour, Alex Balanescu, Stefano Di Battista, Efren Lopez and Kelly Toma, as well as actors, poets, journalists and artists from all over the world.
