From 3 to 8 February, as part of the Doppio Sogno season, the majestic romantic ballet returns to the stage of the Teatro Costanzi in Benjamin Pech's choreography, created in 2023 for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
Inspired by the Indian poem Sakuntala, La Bayadère was conceived in the second half of the 19th century by Marius Petipa, with a libretto by Sergei Chudekov and music by Ludwig Minkus. It premiered on June 23, 1877, in St. Petersburg, achieving great success.
Set against the backdrop of an exotic and fascinating Indian landscape, the three-act ballet tells the story of the bayadère Nikija, who is secretly in love with the warrior Solor. However, the man has been promised in marriage to Gamzatti, daughter of the Rajah, who, after discovering the betrayal, hides a snake in a gift of flowers, killing Nikiya, who reappears to Solor as a Shadow, dancing with him in the evocative Kingdom of the Shades.
On stage, with set design by Ignasi Monreal and costumes by Laura Biagiotti, are the Étoile and the Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, with the participation of the Allievi della Scuola di Danza del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, together with Sae Eun Park and Paul Marque, étoiles of the Opéra de Paris, accompanied by the splendid music of the Austrian composer, performed by the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Fayçal Karoui.
