From 17 to 31 December, the Christmas ballet par excellence returns to the stage of the Teatro Costanzi in Paul Chalmer's enchanting choreography.
First performed in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, The Nutcracker is inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous fairy tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and tells the story of Clara's dream on Christmas Eve at the beginning of the 19th century.
With sets designed by Andrea Miglio and lighting by Valerio Tiberi, the dreamlike atmosphere, with characters such as the Nutcracker Prince, the Sugar Plum Fairy, little Clara, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, joined by toys, mice and soldiers, is the backdrop to Christmas Eve, when, at the stroke of midnight, Clara's dreams and desires come true, giving life to a timeless tale that continues to fascinate generations.
On stage, a cast of extraordinary artists, including the Étoiles, the Principal Dancers, Soloists and Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma as well as Chloe Misseldine, principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, dance with costumes by the renowned designer Gianluca Falaschi, accompanied by Tchaikovsky's splendid music performed by the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted alternately by Nir Kabaretti and Carlo Donadio.
