Tina Modotti - L’Eros della rivoluzione

Tina Modotti ritratta da Diego Rivera in un murales del 1924, Roma Fotografia 2020 EROS

Palazzo Merulana hosts L'Eros della Rivoluzione, the personal exhibition by Tina Modotti, a nonconformist photographer capable of narrating a revolution with passion and modernity.

The event inaugurates the exhibition program of Roma Fotografia 2020 EROS that investigates the relationship between photography and art focused on desire, passion and beauty.

Emigrant, worker, actress, seamstress, activist, polyglot: Assunta Adelaide Luigia Modotti, called Tina, was born in Udine in 1896 and died in Mexico City in 1942. Mexico was the land that conquered her, the land she loved and which she extraordinarily portrayed in her iconic photographs.

Through four sections, curated by Maria Cristina Valeri and Alex Mezzenga, 38 works from foreign collections explore the desire, the ideals, the determination, and the symbolism of an adventurous woman, for whom photography was «the most eloquent, the most direct means for fixing, for registering the present epoch».

Attention to detail, dignity, sensitivity, art and life mingling: her famous shots and her great creativity tell us about an emancipated, free and powerfully feminine spirit. Tina Modotti has left an important mark on the history of contemporary photography.

During her adventurous life in which she lived in the United States, Mexico, Europe and Russia, she met artists, painters and poets: from Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera, from Pablo Picasso to Rafael Alberti, up to Pablo Neruda, who dedicated to the photographer a poignant poem on the occasion of her death.

The photographs are from Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas  (IIE), Fondo “Manuel Toussaint” dell’Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) of Mexico City, and from the National Photographic Collection of Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) of Pachuca Hidalgo, Mexico.
