St. Joseph of the Carpenters is one of those amazing Roman churches so singular that it is worth visiting.
Its location is unique because it was built above the Mamertine Prison, the ancient Roman Tullianum prison where, according to tradition, St. Peter was imprisoned before his martyrdom.
The Church is also surrounded by the Capitol Hill, the Arch of Septimius Severus and the church of Santi Luca e Martina that hosted the 17th century San Luca Academy, the Confraternity of Artists in Rome.
St. Joseph of the Carpenters is contemplated for a golden light that pervades throughout the artistically decorated interior. Its construction began in 1597, thanks to the Confraternity of the Carpenters who collected the most talented craftsmen and artists of wood.
The annexed Oratory of St. Joseph, a really unexpected gem, hosts a wonderfully carved ceiling, together with the beautiful frescoes painted by the painter Marco Tullio Montagna in the first half of the seventeenth century.
The composition of Montagna, in particular the representation of the prophets and sybils, reflects the influence of the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes by Michelangelo, as well as the entire wall representation of St. Joseph's marriage and the Virgin Mary reflects that of Raphael in the famous "School of Athens".
The entire complex is well worth a visit!

The Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami is still closed to the public for restoration work, but the Carcere Mamertino can be visited.
