Roma Mobilità has begun work on via dei Cerchi, in the heart of Rome, to install the SOSPAS (Smart On Street Parking System). This system involves installing IoT sensors - connected devices - in blue-lined parking spaces. These sensors can detect vehicles in real time and send the data to a central monitoring platform. This will allow the devices to monitor parking space occupancy.
The primary purpose of the project's first phase is to gain a clear picture of the occupancy rate in the affected areas and vehicle turnover, enabling precise planning of changes to the parking system. This system will direct drivers to available spaces, reducing congestion. Sensors will also assist enforcement by reporting ticket-failures or illegal occupants of disabled parking spaces or loading and unloading areas, thus making parking management more efficient and digital.
The project concerns 23 neighborhoods with paid parking in Municipio I (Historic Center and Prati) and Municipio II (Flaminio-Parioli-Salario-Nomentano), where 80% of paid parking is concentrated.
All neighborhoods will have technological coverage of at least 5% of parking spaces with 3,089 sensors, while up to 40% will be installed in the busiest areas like Trastevere, Flaminio, Prati, and Monti, with an additional 4,411 sensors. This brings the total to 7,500, including 14 sensors in the loading/unloading bays in the Tridente Limited Traffic Zone.
