The Teatro Sala Umberto presents a stage adaptation of Emily Brontë's celebrated novel, Wuthering Heights, directed by Carmine De Amicis and Francesco Bellomo, starring Giulio Corso and Federica De Benedittis. At its heart is a story of extreme passions, such as love and revenge, which explores the universal themes of great literature.
Written between 1845 and 1846, and first published in 1847 under the name of Ellis Bell, the novel tells about the tormented love between Heathcliff and Catherine set against the backdrop of the English moors. Heathcliff, an orphaned boy, is taken into the care of Mr. Earnshaw, a wealthy gentleman who owns Wuthering Heights, a castle in the English countryside. Soon, a mutual attraction develops between Heathcliff and Catherine, Earnshaw's daughter, which will prove destructive for both of them, as does the hatred the young man incurs from Catherine's brother, Hindley.
The novel - which employs the structure of a long narrative within a narrative - tells of Heathcliff's passionate and obsessive love for Catherine and the negative effect that certain conventional choices can have on individuals. The love between the two protagonists is, in fact, an absolute and devastating one, a deeply disturbed relationship, buried in a gothic and visionary atmosphere. Shadows, wind, silence, and suspended spaces evoke a restless and ancestral world, where the landscape is not simply a backdrop, but a reflection of the protagonists' tormented souls. The moors thus become a mental place before a real one: an emotional space pervaded by desire, anger, absence, and memory, in which Heathcliff and Catherine incessantly seek each other and, at the same time, repel each other. The Teatro Sala Umberto adaptation conveys this constant tension through powerful and visionary images, transforming the feeling into something dark and unsettling.
