The world’s Taekwondo elite returns to Rome in the year marking the 60th anniversary of this traditional Korean martial art in Italy.
The Foro Italico Sports Complex is hosting the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Roma 2026, a prestigious event on the international calendar, bringing the world’s top-ranked athletes to Rome. The programme spans five days, bringing together the world’s elite, Para Taekwondo, technological innovation and youth participation.
On 4 June, get ready for the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix, the international competition dedicated to Paralympic athletes classified in the K44 category (athletes with functional limitations in the upper limbs).
The motto chosen for this edition is “Reborn, Together”, a call for renewal and unity that inspires every aspect of this event. The Rome event also has its own local slogan: “Make History”, underlining the ambition to leave an indelible mark on the history of world sport, in which the Italian Taekwondo Federation has climbed all the rankings to become the top sports federation out of 215 affiliated nations.
The Rome event marks a significant technical innovation: the introduction of sensing gloves, which enable the automatic detection of body strikes. With this technology, a single corner judge will be sufficient to assess the validity and accuracy of technical moves and award points – a revolution in the judging system of Olympic taekwondo. The Daedo Gen3 PSS (Protector and Scoring System) will also be used, including the sensor-equipped helmet, alongside the Instant Video Replay (IVR) system.
To celebrate 60 years of Taekwondo in Italy, the Ponte della Musica is hosting a special event featuring light displays and LED screens, bringing taekwondo directly into the city, amongst Romans and tourists alike.
Not to be missed: the Kim and Liù 2026 Tournament, the competition reserved for the youngest participants – Beginners, Children and Kids – the Virtual Taekwondo Roma Open 2026 - ‘Strike the Future!’, the international virtual reality taekwondo competition using the AXIS system developed by Refract Technologies with the PICO 4 headset, and the Italian Senior Black Belt Taekwondo Championships, reserved for Italian athletes ranked 51st or higher in the WT world rankings.
