Augusto Caffè: a blend of history and modernity

Augusto Caffè
von 8 Januar 2026 bis 31 Dezember 2026

In the heart of a completely renovated Piazza Augusto Imperatore, Augusto Caffè opens its doors: a café designed for locals, visitors, and culture enthusiasts. It’s not just a place to enjoy a coffee, but also an integrated museum service that enriches the experience of the nearby Museo dell’Ara Pacis and the impressive Mausoleum of Augustus.

Open every day, from 8 AM to 8 PM, with extended evening hours for special events, Augusto Caffè was created to accompany the flow of visitors and make the square increasingly vibrant and accessible. Inside the same space, since June, the infopoint, bookshop, and ticket office of the Civic Museums have been active, forming a perfectly integrated service system.

Thanks to this new opening, Piazza Augusto Imperatore is becoming one of the most attractive urban hubs in the city, a key point of connection in the historical Tridente, linking Via del Corso, Via di Ripetta, and the Ara Pacis. It’s a symbolic place where history, art, and contemporary life meet and interact.

The square now presents itself as a unified and harmonious urban space, where traces of ancient, modern, and contemporary Rome blend together in a coherent architectural and urban project, designed to reconnect the Mausoleum of Augustus with the surrounding area.

A distinctive feature of the new layout are the two wide cordonata pathways: one leading towards Via di Ripetta, the other towards the apse of the Church of San Carlo al Corso. These paths connect the current street level with the original height of the Mausoleum, highlighted by exposed sections of 1st-century travertine pavement, left visible as a precious historical testimony.

The café-infopoint is designed as a walk-through space, accessible via the wide landings at the end of the cordonata. This design choice highlights its dual purpose: as both a passageway and a place of rest, it serves as a connection point, while also offering a privileged space for contemplating the monument and the square, set apart by a subtle raised base.

The service is managed by LE CAFFETTERIE DI PALOMBINI Srl, awarded the contract following an open tender issued by Zètema Progetto Cultura in June 2025, as part of the service agreement with the City of Rome.

Completing the project is the recent work on Largo degli Schiavoni, where the road layout and pavements have been redefined in continuity with the new design of the square, allowing for a greater opening and connection to Via Tomacelli.
