Porta Portese Market

Porta Portese

Located in the characteristic Rione Trastevere, the historical Porta Portese market is the most famous and largest in Rome and a Sunday ritual for the Romans and one of the essential stops for tourists visiting the Capital.

It extends over a vast area between piazza Ippolito Nievo above, Via Ettore Rolli on the left, and Via Portuense on the right. The market, taking its name from the 17th-century Porta, built to replace the ancient Porta Portuensis, and was born around 1945 to allow the Romans to sell, buy and barter all kinds of objects, in continuity with the black market that previously took place in the area of Campo de' Fiori.

It is a real combination of colours, voices and cultures, where you can breathe the atmosphere of Rome of the past, immortalized over the years by poets, directors and songwriters: we can mention the famous scenes from Bicycle Thieves by Vittorio De Sica, Mamma Roma by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Big Deal on Madonna Street by Mario Monicelli and the homonymous song by Claudio Baglioni.

It is a true paradise for shopping and vintage lovers and, as the old saying goes, among its hundreds of stalls, "you can find everything from pills to Jumbo Jets": antiques and modern art and items, paintings, books, jewels and costume jewellery, watches, furniture, records and CDs, electronics, home, cars and motorcycles accessories, toys, linens, clothing, as well as accessories and extravagant objects.

After your purchases, you can take a pleasant walk through the alleys and picturesque squares of Trastevere and visit some of the most fascinating places in the city. Do not miss the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, probably the first official place of Christian worship in Rome, the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, with the suggestive statue of the saint by Stefano Maderno, the Sanctuary of San Francesco a Ripa Grande, with the Ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Museum of Roma in Trastevere, dedicated to the history of daily life and Roman traditions, and the Gianicolo Hill, where you can admire the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola and a spectacular view of Rome.

On the other side of the Tiber, passing through the Tiber Island, you can discover Rione Testaccio, the true soul of Rome, where examples of industrial archeology, contemporary museums, archaeological areas and trendy clubs coexist, or the historic Jewish Ghetto, one of the oldest in the world, a small neighborhood rich in archaeological and cultural testimonies, where you can taste the delicacies of Jewish-Roman and kosher cuisine.
