Combating environmental incivility, promoting best practices, managing urban waste. For the first time, Rome has been recognised as a Plastic-Free Municipality, an award given by Plastic Free Onlus to the most virtuous city administrations in the fight against littering and in protecting the environment and future generations.
Plastic Free Onlus is an Italian non-profit voluntary association founded in 2019 with the aim of combating plastic pollution and promoting more sustainable behaviour, collaborating with local and national bodies, including municipal administrations and institutions, to develop concrete policies and actions. In 2025 alone, the association mobilised more than 53,000 volunteers for environmental clean-up initiatives throughout Italy (on beaches, in parks and in public areas) and awareness-raising initiatives in schools.
The 141 municipalities awarded by Plastic Free Onlus in 2026 were evaluated on the basis of 20 criteria, including the fight against littering, the reduction of single-use plastics in public buildings and awareness-raising initiatives. In the case of Rome, the award recognises initiatives such as the annual Roma Cura Roma event and the activities included in the protocol signed with Ama and Plastic Free to improve urban decorum.
