Founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting the infinite variety of identities and cultures that characterise the shores of the Mediterranean, the MedFilm Festival is the only Italian event dedicated to Euro-Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cinema and also the longest-running film festival in the city of Rome.
From 6 to 16 November, for its 31st edition, the festival will enliven the city’s cinemas and cultural venues (including The Space Cinema Moderno, the Teatro Palladium, the Casa del Cinema, the Flamigni Archive and Sapienza Università di Roma) with films and events: the film competition, industry meetings, historical retrospectives, literary events, university masterclasses and meetings with inmates in prison. This year’s theme is “Hope”, understood as a vital and active drive towards a peaceful future.
Over eighty films (from 33 countries) will be presented in national, international and world premieres in the various sections of the festival (Official Competition, International Short Film Competition, the non-competitive sections “Atlante”, “Perle”, dedicated to Italian cinema, “Sguardi dal futuro”, with film school students, “Voci dal carcere”, with works created by inmates, “Letture dal Mediterraneo”, dedicated to literature). Many of the films will be accompanied by their authors or protagonists. Seven film projects and six films seeking support for post-production are the focus of MedMeetings, the festival’s industry event, now in its ninth edition, which brings together Italian and international producers.
New features of the 2025 edition include collaborations with Made in Qatar Shortcuts 2025, Cabriolet Film Festival and Pianeta Mare Film Festival - The best cinema on the blue planet, and the Ecumenical Award established as part of the 2025 Jubilee with the Institut Français - Centre Saint-Louis and reserved for films that recount the depth of human experience by highlighting universal values such as hope, justice and solidarity. MedFilm also has an online presence thanks to its collaboration with MYmovies ONE.
