Promoted by the Department of Culture of Rome Capital and Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, the exhibition at the Mattatoio in Testaccio invites visitors to reflect on the degree of awareness that our society has towards animals and animality. Since his debut in the 1980s, Ottavio Celestini has always focused his work on the relationship between humans and the environment: here, through photographic images filtered by history, myth and contemporary life, the artist presents his vision of the animal world, the majesty and tenacity of animals, their suffering and pride.
The exhibition features large-format photographic portraits dedicated to the world of bovids and equines, a group of four interpretations by the artist of historical photographs from the late 19th century by Count Primoli dedicated to the slaughterhouse. The exhibition continues the dialogue between sculpture and photography with the Mnemosyne series and with photographic elaborations derived from classical sculptures photographed in national and international museums. The last photographic series includes the human figure as evidence of the close, albeit complex and contradictory, relationship between man and animality.
The artist’s visual and, in some respects, visionary ability highlights the difficulty of understanding the non-human animal world and aims to achieve a balance that is not only aesthetic but also ethical.
