From 3 June to 7 August, the Caracalla Festival - the summer season of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma - is back against the backdrop of the majestic Baths of Caracalla and, for the first time, in the setting of the Basilica of Maxentius.
Entrusted to Damiano Michieletto, the great event presents, under the title ‘Tra sacro e umano’ (Between the Sacred and the Human), a rich programme including opera, sacred music, a musical, dance, concerts and meetings.
Eagerly awaited are the pop music concerts anticipating the festival: on stage, international artists such as Fiorella Mannoia (3 June), Riccardo Cocciante (6 and 8 June), Alessandra Amoroso (11 June), Giorgia (13 and 14 June), Antonello Venditti (17, 19 and 21 June), Giovanni Allevi (20 June) and Alex Britti (22 June).
The Caracalla Festival 2025 inaugurates at the Basilica of Maxentius on the feast in honour of Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June, with La gioia interiore, featuring the theologian and communicator Vito Mancuso, accompanied by the performance of the Lagrime di San Pietro, the cycle of madrigals for seven voices composed by Orlando di Lasso, with live electronics interventions by the Roman composer Vittorio Montalti.
The programme includes four new productions - Händel's La Resurrezione (Basilica of Maxentius, 1,2,4 and 5 July), two of the best-loved opera titles, La traviata (The Baths of Caracalla, 19,23, 27 July and 1,2,3 August), Don Giovanni (Basilica of Maxentius, 20,22,24 and 25 July) and the iconic musical West Side Story (The Baths of Caracalla, 5,9,13 and 17 July).
The dance programme sees on stage the traditional gala with Roberto Bolle and Friends (15 and 16 July) and, on 30 and 31 July, the two evenings of Bausch - Béjart - Wheeldon, with a performance by the Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera, directed by Eleonora Abbagnato, in Within the Golden Hour, to recorded music by Ezio Bosso and Antonio Vivaldi, Maurice Ravel's Bolero, choreographed by Maurice Béjart, and Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps with Pina Bausch's choreography, for the first time performed by an Italian company,
Realised in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma and, this year, also with the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, the prestigious event closes on 7 August at the Baths of Caracalla with Carmina Burana, the evocative scenic cantata composed in the second half of the 1930s by Carl Orff.
