The seventh fragment of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ found and on display

Settimo frammento del Compianto sul Cristo morto di Luca Signorelli
from 23 November 2019 to 12 January 2020

The exhibition Luca Signorelli and Rome. Oblivion and rediscovery, hosted at Musei Capitolini and dedicated to one of the masters of Renaissance painting, is enriched by a new artwork.

The seventh fragment of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ was found thanks to the well-known art historian Andrea De Marchi, who recognised a small table, purchased by a private collector, as part of the large altarpiece painted by Signorelli between 1504 and 1505.

The face of a "Sorrowful Virgin" and other figurative elements present in the work, painted by the artist for the Church of Sant'Agostino in Matelica, indicated that the fragment belongs to a probable Deposition of the Renaissance period.

Presented on 27 and 28 November at Musei Capitolini, on the occasion of the two Study Days about Luca Signorelli, the precious find goes alongside the other two fragments of the altarpiece, Pia donna in pianto (of Musei Civici d’Arte Antica in Bologna) and Testa di Cristo of the UniCredit Art Collection (on loan at Musei Comunali in Bologna) displayed in the exhibition path, where it can be admired until 12 January 2020.
