Since 1990, it has been one of the most eagerly awaited events of Labour Day. Historically promoted by the trade unions CGIL, CISL and UIL and organised by iCompany, the Primo Maggio Concert is Italy’s largest and most historic free live music event, a long musical marathon that traditionally takes place (barring exceptional circumstances) in the square in front of the Basilica of St John Lateran, starting in the early afternoon.
The “Concertone”, as it is often called to emphasise its scale, has seen a host of well-known figures from the world of entertainment, as well as Italian and international singers and bands, take to the stage over the years. On Labour Day, music becomes a vehicle for social commentary, for reflection on the present and the future: the 2026 edition centres on the theme “Tomorrow is still ours”, addressing the issues of decent work, collective bargaining, new safeguards and new rights in the age of artificial intelligence.
The line-up for the 2026 edition currently includes big names such as Geolier, Riccardo Cocciante, Liftiba, Angelica Bove, Chiello, Ditonellapiaga, Eddie Brock, Ermal Meta and Sayf. The line-up is constantly being updated and can be viewed on the website www.primomaggio.net. As every year, the Primo Maggio stage also provides a showcase for emerging talent through the 1MNEXT contest, the event’s official competition, which selects the best new projects each year. The finalists have the opportunity to perform live and compete for the title of overall winner during the afternoon of the event.
