Donna con rosa rossa entrambe stilizzate
from 7 March 2024 to 9 March 2024

Celebrated for the first time in 1909 in the United States, International Women's Day was established to commemorate the social, economic and political achievements of women, but also the discrimination they have been and are still subjected to in the world.

To honor the female universe and some of the major protagonists of the city's cultural and social life of yesterday and today, Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali have organized a wide program of initiatives including visits, itineraries and themed routes. The appointments and events will take place between Thursday, 7 March and Saturday, 9 March in the Museums and along the streets of the city.

Two special events are planned for this Day: at 3 p.m., the Pinacoteca of the Capitoline Museums will present Donne in Pinacoteca, a multimedia "audioguide" project curated by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina, where art, history and technology come together to allow you, through your mobile device, to follow a tour in which the protagonists of some of the gallery's masterpieces tell their stories.

Each of the eight selected works has a personalized storytelling to allow you to discover in depth the history and context for every woman represented. You will be able to hear the voices of:

  • Europa introducing Veronese's The Rape of Europa
  • Penitent Magdalene portrayed by Tintoretto
  • Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen in Guido Reni's painting
  • Circe in the work of Giovanni Andrea Sirani
  • Ersilia, one of the kidnapped Sabine women painted by Pietro da Cortona
  • Caravaggio's "Gypsy" who narrates in the first person the creation of the "Good Fortune"
  • Maria Felice Tibaldi Subleyras and Maria Luigia Raggi, the two women painters, recount their lives and works, Supper in the House of the Pharisee and Landscapes with Ruins.

The guided tour is introduced by the Assessore alle Politiche della Sicurezza, Attività Produttive e Pari Opportunità Monica Lucarelli and conducted by the Direttrice della Direzione Musei Civici della Sovrintendenza Capitolina Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and the Responsabile della Pinacoteca Capitolina Federica Maria Papi.

At 4:30 p.m., as part of the cycle Dalle carte alle storie. Storia e storie d'Archivio, the Archivio Storico Capitolino dedicates a tribute to the figure of Lucia Sebastiani, former teacher of modern history, who loved to spend entire days immersed in her research among ancient papers: a tribute, a few months after her death, to the memory of this passionate scholar, author of important essays and monographs.

The other meetings scheduled in the Museums in the City kick off on Thursday, 7 March at the Museum of Rome in Palazzo Braschi, discovering, through their portraits, the women who animated the Roman artistic and cultural scene in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Friday, 8 March:

Among the activities proposed in the territory, on Thursday, March 7, the Street Art in San Lorenzo itinerary focuses on the main works of street art that tell the history and identity of the historic neighborhood, through themes such as Resistance, hospitality, solidarity and civil rights.

Saturday, 9 March: Essere donna a Roma tra il Sedicesimo e il XVII secolo (Being a woman in Rome between the 16th and 17th centuries), an itinerary in the Rione Colonna and Campo Marzio to discover the places destined for women such as the Convent of the Convertite, the "Serraglio delle pubbliche meretrici," the Ospedale delle Celate and the models of Trinità dei Monti.
