Curated jointly with outgoing artistic director Luca Lo Pinto in an ideal handover, the major group exhibition organized by Cristiana Perrella to inaugurate her tenure as director of the MACRO museum captures the current artistic landscape in Rome, presenting the public with around forty works by artists of different generations, most of which have never been seen before.
Created using cross-disciplinary languages, from visual arts to music, cinema to performance, the works exhibited in the two large rooms designed by Odile Decq convey a hybrid, intergenerational image of the city and its cultural fabric, made up of diverse realities and communities in constant ferment. It is a sort of collective film constructed as a single sequence shot (a long continuous shot that follows the protagonists and actions) filmed through an ideal green screen: while in cinematographic language the green screen is a technique for layering more images, in the exhibition the large green strip that crosses the space and along which the works are arranged gives life to a single installation, a common surface that welcomes different visions, actions and gestures.
Like a film that alternates between moments of stasis and action, the exhibition is divided into three parts: Set, the main exhibition on the ground floor; Live, a program of live performances, concerts, DJ sets, conversations, workshops and screenings; and Off, a widespread section that invites independent spaces in the city to present projects in their own venues, expanding the narrative of the exhibition. The new MACRO thus presents itself as an experimental and welcoming space in which to celebrate the ability to design together and influence each other.
