Officially started with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on 24 December 2024, the Jubilee 2025 is the 27th ordinary universal jubilee in the history of the Church and the second jubilee celebrated by the current pontiff after the extraordinary one in 2015.
The entire jubilee period is characterized by a rich calendar of religious, cultural and social events. Aside from celebrations and rituals addressed to all the faithful, the Holy Year’s program includes several “jubilees” dedicated to different categories of people, identified according to specific professions or their role within the family, the Church and society. Each one includes moments of dialogue and spirituality, with a concluding mass celebrated by the pope.
The days from 14 to 15 June are dedicated to all those involved in the world of sport, therefore athletes, amateurs, coaches, managers and members of sports associations, invited to participate in the jubilee event together with their families. On Saturday 14 June, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Auditorium Augustinianum in Via Paolo VI will host “The leap of hope: stories beyond the podium of hope”, a free event (on-line registration required) organised by the Dicastery for Culture and Education with the participation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
In the afternoon, Piazza del Popolo will be transformed into a lively and inclusive sports village, with stands and activities open to all: a unique opportunity to meet great sports champions and listen to their experiences. At 5 p.m., a symbolic and spiritual pilgrimage will lead from Piazza del Popolo to St. Peter’s Square, culminating with the passage through the Holy Door. At 9.30 p.m. in Piazza San Cosimato, the Oscar-winning film “Chariots of Fire” by Hugh Hudson will light up the skies of Rome with an open-air screening organised by the Dicastery for Culture and Education together with Piccolo America Foundation. On Sunday 15 June, St. Peter’s Square will host the traditional morning mass presided over by the pontiff or his delegate: entrance to the square on this occasion is completely free and does not require any type of ticket. In the afternoon, the appointment continues at the sports village in Piazza del Popolo.
The program may be subject to change.
