Guttuso's Vucciria on display at Montecitorio

La Vucciria - Renato Guttuso, 1974
depuis 2 Décembre 2019 à 12 Janvier 2020

The most famous painting by the Sicilian painter Renato Guttuso exhibited in the prestigious Sala della Lupa of Palazzo Montecitorio, seat of the Camera dei Deputati.

Created in 1974, La Vucciria is the grandiose three-square-meter artwork painted by the artist at the height of its expressive maturity and donated by the same author to the University of Palermo, where it is normally exhibited at the institutional headquarters of Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri.

The painting, which immerses the viewer in an everyday life scene, presents the raw and sanguine realism of the famous Palermo market, where the strong shouting and chanting of the "vanniaturi" - the auctioneers - mix with the scents of typical products, of the fruits and vegetables on their stalls. One of the many souls of Palermo that Guttuso expresses and masterfully renders with bright and “screaming” colours that, like real "vanniaturi", shout in the visitor's face.

The term "vucciria", derived from the French boucherie (butcher shop), in Sicilian "bocceria", has taken on the meaning of confusion, an incomprehensible mixture of voices, people, objects, which together give life to the expressions and actions typical of a market crossed by numerous customers who join in a habitual physical contact, and in which the space is punctuated by the boxes of fish and crustaceans, of fruit and vegetables and by the quarter of ox hung on the hooks of the flesh-maker surrounding them.

Alongside the Vucciria, you will also be able to admire two other works by the artist: the Cristo deriso of 1938 and the Carrettieri siciliani of 1946, both belonging to the collections of the Camera dei Deputati and so far never exposed to the public.

The exhibition opens from Monday to Friday, from 10am to 6.15pm. Free entry from Piazza del Parlamento n. 25, every 45 minutes until 5.30 pm.

Sunday 12 January 2020, on the occasion of the "Montecitorio a porte aperte" event, the Vucciria exhibition is included in the visit of the building with online booking on the Camera website: www.camera.it
