The Pyramid of Cestius: a new series of opening days following the PNRR restoration works

Piramide Cestia Ph. Fabio Caricchia

Built in 330 days in accordance with specific provisions in a will, the Pyramid of Cestius has defined Rome’s urban landscape, standing the test of time. It is the only funerary monument inspired by the Egyptian style – which became widespread in Rome following the Battle of Actium in 31 BC – to have survived to the present day.

The recent restoration and enhancement project, funded by the PNRR, has made it possible to secure the access staircase, reorganise the garden’s plantings – through a survey of existing plant species and monitoring of their condition – install a new lighting system, and set up a series of educational and welcome panels aimed at improving accessibility. Following the completion of the project, the Special Superintendency of Rome is organising a series of special openings to return this monument – which has become part of the city’s collective imagination – to the public.

From 4 September to 31 October 2026, the programme includes eight daytime openings with free, self-guided tours (booking mandatory) and five evening openings with free guided tours (booking mandatory), as well as two special events to mark the European Heritage Days on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026.

The programme is subject to change
