The World Children's Day is celebrated annually on November 20th to raise awareness of the rights of children and adolescents. This date was chosen because, on November 20, 1959, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and in 1989, the same General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world, with 196 signatory countries.
The World Children's Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day and is celebrated annually on the same day to promote international solidarity, awareness among children around the world, and the improvement of their well-being.
Since 1990, the World Children's Day has also marked the anniversary of the date when the United Nations General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
