To celebrate the canonization of the first Venezuelan saints José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles, the Terrazza del Pincio in Villa Borghese is hosting a grand outdoor concert at 6 p.m. featuring the National Youth and Children’s Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, conducted by Andrés David Ascanio, and the Simón Bolívar National Choir, conducted by Lourdes Sánchez.
The orchestra was founded in 1995 by José Antonio Abreu and is composed for the occasion of 175 boys and girls aged between 8 and 14. These were trained according to the innovative educational method that teaches them to play an instrument collectively rather than individually as part of the “El Sistema” project, created 50 years ago to offer free access to music to young people from different backgrounds. In 2021, “El Sistema” won the Guinness World Record for the “world’s largest orchestra”, bringing together over 12,000 musicians who played Tchaikovsky’s Slavonic March simultaneously. Currently, the program has 1,722 orchestras, 443 centers, and 2,957 academic modules nationwide.
The musical repertoire presented for the evening includes pieces by European, Latin American, and Venezuelan classical composers, performed with great energy by this new generation of Venezuelan musicians. These include Marche Slave and the 4th movement of Symphony No. 4 by P.I. Tchaikovsky; Danse Macabre, Op. 40 by C. Saint-Saëns; Hallelujah by G. F. Handel; Te Deum by M.A. Charpentier; Overture to William Tell by G. Rossini; Toreadors by G. Bizet; Danzón No. 2 by A. Márquez; Alma Llanera; and Venezuela.
