Palazzo Tonti

Started at the end of the 16th century and donated by Michelangelo Tonti, archbishop of Nazareth, to the Scolopians to turn it into a college for poor youngsters. Enlarged on the sides in 1698-1712, it still retains its original features only towards Via del Tritone. The façade, in austere Renaissance style, has a rusticated portal with balcony and windows on the ground floor with corbels decorated with triglyphs and lion heads. The courtyard, decorated with ancient statues, has a nymphaeum at the back; the rooms on the ground floor preserve remains of the 16th century decoration, while on the first floor the gallery houses ancient busts, portraits of cardinals (18th-19th centuries), allegorical scenes and emblems of the princes of the Accademia degli Incolti.
