Natural Monument Fosso della Cecchignola

The latest addition to the network of Nature Reserves managed by RomaNatura, the Fosso della Cecchignola Natural Monument is a splendid green space rich in biodiversity, nestled in the Agro Romano – a lush oasis spanning almost 100 hectares that provides a habitat for an incredible variety of flora and fauna.

Dominated by the imposing tower (45 meters high) of the Castello or Casale della Cecchignola, the protected area contains important archaeological and historical remains that enhance its charm. In addition to the medieval castle – which was restored to its present form in the 17th century and served for many years as a hunting lodge for the popes – there are sections of Roman paving, remains of rural settlements (also dating from the Roman period), and a partially ruined watchtower dating from the 3rd century AD.

The area boasts a wide variety of vegetation: wild grasses, with splendid displays of poppies and cornflowers; shrubs typical of the Macchia Mediterranea (hawthorn, butcher’s broom, honeysuckle, dog rose…); mushrooms, mosses, reed beds and woodland, with particularly valuable tall trees such as ash, maple and field elm, black poplar and holm oak. This environment is home to an equally diverse range of wildlife: foxes, porcupines and hedgehogs, blackbirds, goldfinches, owls and nightingales are just some of the inhabitants of the Fosso’s various habitats. Among the birds of prey, the most notable species are the peregrine falcon and the kestrel.

The landscape is also characterised by fields of wheat and open pastures, with the occasional flock of sheep.
