Museo Laboratorio della Mente

The Museo Laboratorio della Mente (Museum Laboratory of the Mind) of ASL Roma 1 was born from the collaboration with Studio Azzurro and presents itself as a narrative museum that aims to document the history of the asylum institution and to start a reflection on the theme of diversity and social exclusion.

The exhibition occupies the ground floor of the sixth pavilion of the former Santa Maria della Pietà asylum in Rome. The idea behind it is to create a context that allows the visitor to reflect on the concepts of normality and deviance, on the self and the other; a context that gives the visitor the chance to develop empathy towards the conditions of suffering and to learn what an asylum was and what mechanisms of segregation and social exclusion were implemented there.

In addition to the works by Studio Azzurro, the museum also houses the scientific collections and historical artefacts belonging to the former asylum, from the pharmacy equipment to the medical and scientific research instruments, and the collections of irregular art assembled during the 1980s and 1990s.
