Museo di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme

The Museum of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem is annexed to the Basilica and was inaugurated in December 1999. It exhibits works of remarkable historical, artistic, and religious interest. The collection consists of four sections, that illustrate the significant stages of the history of the Basilica, the Monastery, and the surrounding area. The section of the frescoes includes the twelfth century cycle of the Patriarchs detached from the attic of the Basilica; a fourteenth century Crucifixion of the school of Giotto; the cycle of fourteenth century frescos of the school of P. Cavallini detached from the Oratory of Santa Margherita in the Aurelian walls. The section of paintings presents fourteenth-twentieth century works of authors of the Roman, Tuscan, and Lombard schools. The section of religious furnishings includes the reliquary of Saint Gregory the Great of remarkable value, with a fourteenth century mosaic icon of the Imago Pietatis, a fifteenth century stational cross; two fourteenth century alabaster statues of English manufacture representing the apostles Peter and Paul. The section of the illuminated liturgical codices consists of four fourteenth century Graduals coming from the Abbey in Settimo near Florence.Connections: Tram 3
