During excavations carried out between 1973 and 1975, an edifice dedicated to the Persian deity Mithras was found under the Church of Santo Stefano Rotondo. This cultic centre was constructed in the second century AD and enlarged at the beginning of the following century. As well as paintings relating directly to the cult, there is also a fresco which represents the personification of the moon.
