The Gruppo Storico Romano is a non-profit cultural association founded in 1994, born out of a shared passion for Ancient Rome. A group of friends, united by this common interest, decided to embark on this journey on a symbolic date: 21 April, the traditional anniversary of the founding of the Eternal City.
After more than thirty years of activity, the Gruppo Storico Romano stands out in the field of Ancient Roman re-enactment and is widely recognised as one of the leading groups in Italy and worldwide.
The association’s aims are to promote, organise, and support cultural, recreational, and artistic events related to the world of Ancient Rome, in order to preserve the ancient splendour of its civilisation. Equally important is its role as a meeting point for enthusiasts, bringing together all those passionate about Ancient Rome, who – by becoming members – form its beating heart.
Within the association, several re-enactment sections coexist: Legion, Praetorian Guard, Gladiators, Senate, Vestal Virgins, Social Anthropology, Theatre, Dance, and Music. Each section carries out intensive work in experimental archaeology, based on reconstructing aspects of civilian and military life through direct experience.
The historical re-enactment process of the Gruppo Storico Romano includes a preliminary phase of study, research, in-depth analysis, practical experimentation, and learning. A fundamental methodology for this phase is the accurate reading and interpretation of historical sources relating to the phenomenon being reconstructed. The group’s primary activity is focused on the “Reconstructive Event”, which narrows the time frame and thematic scope as much as possible to ensure maximum historical accuracy in the creation and use of clothing, equipment, music, food, accessories, and settings inspired by original artefacts.
Within the Reconstructive Event framework, two main approaches are identified: “Living History”, which involves rediscovering the past in all its forms – civil, technological, scientific, artistic, and military – and “Re-enactment”, which consists of reconstructing a specific historical event (military, civil, or religious), staging it in the same location and, as far as possible, using the same methods.
Finally, the “Theatrical Edicules” in archaeological sites offer a dedicated pathway to narrate the history of a site through the figures who lived there or notable personalities who influenced its historical developments.
Among the most popular and eagerly awaited yearly events organised by the Gruppo Storico Romano, the Natale di Roma (Birthday of Rome) stands out for its high institutional and international profile, evidenced by seven Medals of the President of the Republic and the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, ENIT S.p.A., the Lazio Region, Roma Capitale, and the Embassies of Romania, Belgium, and the Czech Republic, as well as the endorsement of the President of the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
