Erbario - Museo di botanica - Polo museale Sapienza

The Herbarium – Museum of Botany was founded in 1872 on the initiative of the university teacher of Botany Giuseppe De Notaris (1805-1877) and was firstly located in some rooms of the ancient convent of San Lorenzo in Panisperna. The collection has increased with the purchase and introduction of single private collections, such as Ettore Rolli’s and Vincenzo Cesati’s. The Herbarium currently is the second in Italy after the National Herbarium in Florence and one of the largest in Europe. It keeps over one million vegetable specimens (coming from various Italian regions and from abroad), flattened and dried, kept in special folders. The collection is divided in five sections and represents an important scientific testimony of the incredible extension of the variety of vegetables.
