A public area dedicated to sport and entertainment, surrounded by greenery but in the heart of Rome, with a postcard view: it's the Colle Oppio Playground, a modern tourist attraction but also a unique meeting place where skaters and freestylers from all over the world can have fun and spend a few carefree hours against the backdrop of the Colosseum, the most iconic monument in the world.
Surrounded by the remains of the Baths of Trajan, the old sports fields in the area of the so-called "Polveriera" - it housed ammunitions in the 17th century - have undergone a long renovation and enhancement brand-new basketball court and a skatepark where you can indulge yourself in heelflips, airwalks, and board slides.
These and other spectacular evolutions are possible today thanks to the most Instagram-able skatepark ever, which, celebrated by the prestigious New York Times newspaper, has also made inroads overseas and has made Rome one of the top destinations for practicing the popular sport.
Right here, on the heights of Colle Oppio, World Skate, the governing body of all skating wheel sports, organized the World street skateboarding Rome 2022, the first stage of the Olympic qualifiers towards Paris 2024, to which over 250 enthusiastic international athletes took part.
The entrance to the playground is completely free.
