Built in the 20th century to a design by Antonio Guidi, the church is the seat of the parish of the same name, established on 17 July 1954 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara Qua celeritate. Since 14 February 2015, the cardinal title of St. Irenaeus in Centocelle has insisted on it. Cardinal regent is Bishop Charles Maung Bo, S.D.B, the first Burmese bishop to receive the dignity of cardinal.To the right of the entrance is the octagonal-shaped immersion baptistery. Next to it is a painting depicting the titular saint of the church, the work of Mario Barberis (1955). The painting depicts essential moments in the life of Irenaeus of Lyon, the palm of martyrdom, Roman ruins representing ancient times, the defence of the papacy and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The painting is placed on a wooden altar in neo-Gothic style, donated to the church by Cardinal Pierre-Marie Gerlier of Lyon.On 28 June 2011, a series of icons representing the life of Jesus were unveiled on the curved walls of the apsidal space at the end of the solemn Mass of St. Irenaeus.
