Rome to stage 2024 European Athletics Championships

22 September 2022

European Athletics, the federation that governs athletics in Europe, has chosen Rome to host the prestigious continental event from 7 to 12 June 2024. An event that looks to the future, sustainability, and digital but also to tradition, fifty years after the edition in which the unforgettable Pietro Mennea triumphed in the 200 meters golden sprint at the Stadio Olimpico in 1974.

In that edition, the great Puglian athlete also won two silver medals in the 100 and 4x100 races with Vincenzo Guerini, Norberto Oliosi, and Luigi Benedetti.

And like fifty years ago, the athletes will compete on the track of the Stadio Olimpico that, starting in November, in conjunction with the football championship for the World Cup in Qatar break, will be completely renewed. The long jump platform will be moved and placed in the area outside the track where the current parterre of the Tiber grandstand is, while that of the Stadio dei Marmi will undergo a total makeover.

If the city stadium is the point of reference and where most of the challenges will take place, some of the most evocative city locations will be the backdrop to other competitions. The jet of weight will take place in the shadow of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, the march in Viale delle Terme di Caracalla and the half marathon on the route of the Half Marathon Via Pacis with departure and arrival in Via della Conciliazione, dominated by the imposing St. Peter's Basilica.
