Palazzo Doria Pamphilj opens Nymphaeum of Diana to the public for the first time

Ninfeo di Diana-Palazzo Doria Pamphilj
from 27 December 2019 to 30 March 2020

Inhabited by princes and princesses from the seventeenth century and today home to a private gallery that houses masterpieces by Caravaggio, Titian, Velasquez, Tintoretto, Raphael, Guercino, Palazzo Doria Pamphilj opens for the first time to the public the splendid rooms of the Nymphaeum of Diana.

Visitors can admire the Pompeian bathroom-alcove, commissioned in 1840 as a gift from Prince Filippo Andrea to his wife Mary Talbot: a small frescoed room decorated with grotesques – with antiques statues at the corners and, on the walls, the images and fruits of the four seasons – and a stunning white-marble shell-bath, dedicated to the Goddess Diana, as its centerpiece.

This authentic architectural jewel of the private Floridi Apartments housed in the sumptuous palace can be visited for free along with the library, another place so far closed to the public.

For the occasion, the traveling Memorie / Tradimenti exhibition opens to the public: organized by the Genius Loci Floridi Doria Pamphilj association, it reveals the dark side of the memory and history of noble families, made of betrayals and misrepresentations. The exhibition includes two big black and white marble dice by the contemporary artist Flavia Bigi: under the title Traditur, the dices evoke tradition, the possibilities offered by fate and the betrayals that marked the relationships between such ancient families.
