Val Gardena Nativity on display at Palazzo del Quirinale

Natività. L’arte del presepe della Val Gardena
from 21 December 2019 to 5 January 2020

From 13 December 2019 to 5 January 2020, palazzina Gregoriana in Palazzo del Quirinale hosts the exhibition "Natività. L’arte del presepe della Val Gardena".
The large wooden nativity scene, by the sculptors Filip Moroder Doss and Thomas Comploi, is conceived in an extraordinary way, characterized by an essential narrative intention that allows the public enter into the space of the sacred scene.

Various groups of figures, slightly modelled and stylized, are aligned on an extension of eight meters and for a height of almost two and a half meters: in the centre, the Holy Family and the Child, covered with a gold lamination, stands out with a soft and enveloping movement in the middle of the block that unites Mary and Joseph in a single compact body.

Although revisited in a modern key, the crib is emblematic of long tradition in Val Gardena, an area that has always been closely connected to the craftsmanship of wood and carving, in which the first artistic testimonies of wooden sculpture date back to the end of the 14th century.

The exhibition is open every day, except on 24, 25, 26, 31 December 2019 and 1 January 2020, from 10 am to 4 pm (last entry at 3 pm), free of charge, with reservations required for € 1.50.
