Contemporary art and design at the Quirinale

Quirinale contemporaneo
from 27 August 2019 to 31 March 2020

On the initiative ofof the President of the Republic, the immense artistic patrimony of the Quirinale is enriched and updated with a significant grafting of works of contemporary Italian art signed by the great names of the 20th century, Italian excellences in the artistic and design fields.

36 artworks by the most important artists on the art scene, and 32 objects conceived by Italian designers and produced by Italian companies, have found a permanent location in the courtyards, in the halls and in the gardens of the Quirinale complex.

The works, strictly Made in Italy paintings and sculptures, were granted by artists and Foundations, the design objects by the manufacturing companies.

Among the prominent names of the new permanent collection: Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Giacomo Manzù, Afro, Alberto Burri, Carla Accardi and Giosetta Fioroni. The designers: Gio Ponti, Piero Fornasetti, Franco Albini, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Carlo Mollino, Gae Aulenti, Gaetano Pesce, Alessandro Mendini and Cini Boeri.

The initiative is accompanied by an extensive catalog which documents the new acquisitions immortalized for the occasion by the great photographer Massimo Listri. The book is published by Treccani and edited by Renata Cristina Mazzantini, the curator of “Quirinale contemporaneo”. Each work is presented by a short critical contribution.
