This year, the Italian Republic celebrates its 80th anniversary: the referendum held on 2 June 1946, in which all eligible voters took part to decide on the country’s institutional form, effectively marked the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Italian Republic, as well as signaling women’s entry into Italian political life.
As is customary, Rome is at the heart of the celebrations, which begin with a solemn flag-raising ceremony at the Altare della Patria and a tribute to the Unknown Soldier, with the President of the Republic laying a laurel wreath, accompanied by the highest officials of the State. The President of the Republic will then receive, in Via di San Gregorio (between the Colosseum and the Circus Maximus), the units lined up for the traditional parade, which has taken place along Via dei Fori Imperiali since 1948. The parade sees the involvement of all branches of the State: military and civilian personnel, armed and unarmed corps, flags and banners, military bands and fanfares. The final honors are performed by the fanfare of the 4th Mounted Carabinieri Regiment and the Corazzieri Regiment. It is possible to watch the parade from the stands set up along Via dei Fori Imperiali by requesting accreditation via the platform at the link https://eventi.difesa.it.
One of the most eagerly awaited events of the day is the spectacular flypast over Rome by the Frecce Tricolori, the National Aerobatic Team, which was established on 1 March 1961 as a permanent unit for training Italian Air Force pilots. The famous Frecce boast the largest number of jet aircraft in a military aerobatic display team, with a record total of 10, achieved in Rimini on 18 June 2022. On that same date, the PAN entered the “Guinness World Records”. To mark Republic Day, state museums and archaeological parks can be visited free of charge during their usual opening hours, with access by booking where required. The Casa del Cinema is also hosting a free screening of “There’s Still Tomorrow” (C’è ancora domain), Paola Cortellesi’s acclaimed directorial debut, in tribute to women’s first vote in general elections (film in original version with English subtitles).
