From 22 January to 1 February, the Teatro Brancaccio will host a show dedicated to the exciting legend of Anastasia Nikolaevna, Grand Duchess of Russia.
Inspired by Anatole Litvak's famous film, starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner, and Marcel Maurette's play, the musical, with libretto by Terrence McNally, tells the story of the young princess, daughter of the last Tsar of Russia: in 1916, she witnesses the dissolution of imperial splendour as the Revolution inflames the streets of St Petersburg, sealing the fate of the Romanov dynasty and leaving only Anastasia and the Empress Mother safe from the revolutionary fury. Years later, a young woman named Anya, who grew up in an orphanage with no memories or roots, embarks on a long journey to Paris, meeting two con artists, Dimitri and Vlad, in search of the princess's perfect lookalike to get a reward, leading to an unexpected ending.
On stage, with direction and set design by Francesco Bellone, an extraordinary cast, accompanied by Stephen Flaherty's evocative music performed live, along with amazing special effects and splendid costumes, creates a theatrical experience that brings to the stage one of the most fascinating mysteries of modern history, combining love, adventure, humour and wonder.
Based on the film distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Motion Pictures, under special agreement with Buena Vista Theatrical, and the stage play by Marcelle Maurette, adapted by Guy Bolton, Anastasia is presented in accordance with Concord Theatricals Ltd.
