At the Auditorium in Via della Conciliazione, the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia will perform Dimitri Šostakovič's Fifth Symphony, conducted by Maestro Jader Bignamini, currently Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and making his debut with the Cecilian orchestra. This is the third event of the Musical Review Concerts of the Jubilee - Harmonies of Hope in preparation for the Holy Year, organised by the First Section of the Dicastery for Evangelisation.
The Accademia di Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest musical institutions in the world, was founded by Sixtus V in 1585. Its Orchestra, considered to be one of the best in Europe, performs Šostakovič's Symphony No. 5 in four movements composed in 1937, lasting about 45 minutes, with a staff of more than 90 conductors.
The theme of my Symphony,' the composer himself wrote, ’is the development of the individual. I considered as the central idea of the work (...) man with all his sufferings (...).
