Smart or artistic: Roman mailboxes change “skin and soul”

from 31 May 2021 to 31 August 2021

A digital revolution but also an aesthetic one: in Rome, some of the approximately six hundred historic red mailboxes of Poste Italiane, which since 1961 have received millions of letters and postcards, adapt to modern times or are dressed in a thousand colors. The city center has just welcomed the first smart mailboxes, in Piazza Navona and in other points of the historic center, for example in Piazza di Monte Citorio. The sensors inside are able to perceive the presence of letters in order to optimize the collection of correspondence, but it does not end there: the new mailboxes record the temperature, humidity and pollution levels, thus functioning as real detection units. The data is displayed and updated on the low energy consumption e-ink display.

However, innovation can also pass through art: the first twenty “Paint” mailboxes were presented together with the smart models, to show how tradition can also be revitalized through the use of new languages. The work was entrusted to five young Italian and foreign street artists, Gojo, Pao, Amina Ferracini, Picnu, About Ponny, who brilliantly painted them and transformed them into small masterpieces. To find out where they are located, just consult their digital “sisters” SmartLetterBoxes, which will show on the screen the addresses of the artistic mailboxes nearby.
