In just a few years, shared mobility has gone from being a novelty to becoming part of the daily lives of thousands of Romans. This is evident from the ninth “Rapporto Nazionale sulla Sharing Mobility” (National Report on Sharing Mobility) which, with its focus on “Mobility as a Right”, crowns Rome as the capital of rentals and recognises shared mobility as a factor in improving life in the city.
The 2025 edition of the Conferenza Nazionale della Sharing Mobility (National Conference on Shared Mobility) brings together all shared mobility solutions, with a focus on the right to mobility, “Mobility as a Service”, i.e. mobility as a service, intermodality for the exchange between different means of transport, demand incentives and integration with public transport, in order to build a more equitable, accessible and multimodal transport system, in accordance with the guidelines of the Social Climate Plan.
Based on data collected in 2024 and the first few months of 2025, shared mobility has become established in the habits of a diverse group of citizens, as a fundamental element for ever greater transport integration – rail, road and sharing – capable of reaching every area of the city.
According to the Report, Roma Capitale has redesigned its scooter and bike sharing services since autumn 2023, with only three operators for scooters and two for bike sharing, a more integrated and widespread operating area, free access for Metrebus annual and monthly subscribers, and balanced territorial coverage with limits in the city centre, minimum guarantees in the suburbs, and maximum intermodality with the local public transport network.
In Rome, shared scooters are used for an average of 2.3 kilometres and 13 minutes, while bicycles are used for 2.4 kilometres and 14 minutes. Last year, there were 11.1 million rentals (the highest figure in Italy), with 8.7 million for scooters and 2.4 million for bicycles.
