The reopening of the Ippodromo delle Capannelle

A venue steeped in Rome’s sporting history and collective memory, restored to the city. Thanks to the institutional collaboration between Roma Capitale and MASAF - the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry – racing has resumed at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle since 4 September.

Situated to the south-east of the city, in the Agro Romano, the racecourse currently covers around 140 hectares. Originally opened in 1881, following a magnificent refurbishment by the architect Paolo Vietti Violi, it became a modern equestrian center in 1926 – a true gem of engineering and architecture set against the backdrop of the ruins of the Claudian Aqueduct and the Villa of Lucrezia Romana.

Following the failure of the previous management, Roma Capitale completed the work required for its reopening in just a few months: the works involved not only the racecourses but also the buildings and public areas. To get the racecourse up and running again and ensure the continuity of the professionals who have been working there for years, management has been provisionally entrusted to Zètema Progetto Cultura, with the support of the Department and the Sports Council.

Check out the racing calendar on the official website.
