At the Pantheon, Hadrian's imperial pavement comes to light

Pavimentazione Pantheon
from 11 May 2020 to 31 December 2020

Rome never ceases to amaze us.

From a sinkhole in Piazza della Rotonda, an imperial-era pavement emerges. At about 2 and a half meters below the road level, seven travertine blocks peek out, intact, and aligned as in origin, with dimensions of about 80 by 90 centimeters for a thickness of 30 centimeters. The pavement covers almost the entire square, and a small missing part will allow archaeologists to continue the excavation for further investigations.

The seven paving stones are part of the restructuring carried out by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD., to cover the area in front of the temple of all the gods built by Agrippa between 27 and 25 BC.

The pavement had already been discovered in the 90s during construction works. This will allow experts to compare the data with the new surveys, to add another piece to the history of the square.

The construction site will continue in the next few days with further archaeological investigations by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma in collaboration with the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali.
